In the fourth grade, the learners’ work on whole numbers is extended to hundred thousand (100 000). It is important for them to visualize numbers up to 100 000 and be able to understand place value and value of a digit in a numeral before they can read and write numbers. Visualizing and reading and writing numbers up to 100 000 are developed with the help of number discs and place value chart. Comparing and ordering numbers also reinforce learners’ knowledge and skills on place value.
Additional exercises should be provided at regular phases of the lesson particularly when reinforcing the concept and skill and application to new and other situation to ensure mastery of whole number concepts in this grade level.
After every lesson, suggested assessment items are provided to find out if learners are able to learn the lesson. Results of this assessment will also tell the teacher if teaching has been effective. After the assessment, the teacher should conduct simple error analysis to find out where the difficulty lies. This is a useful feedback for the teacher to address this difficulty such as non-mastery of the prerequisite skills that are necessary in the lesson taken up.
